Undertaken as part of a broad revitalization project in preparation for the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, the construction of the Seamarq Hotel has created an important new destination for visitors to the region. The unifying strategy for the entire project is the thoughtful integration of the architecture into the spectacular surrounding landscape, with the building complex nestled into a hill of dense pine trees overlooking the East Sea, Gyeongpo Lake, and the Taebaek mountains.
– A rich sequence of spaces unfolds as the visitor’s procession begins from the approach on the main road along Gyeongpo Lake, passing through an entry court and gate to the hotel’s entrance plaza, which has been landscaped with lush local vegetation. A total of 150 guestrooms are contained with the tower and its base, with additional programs ranging from a sun deck and infinity pool to a banquet hall and a luxury spa also integrated into the complex.
The signature space of the hotel is a generous outdoor deck and promontory with an infinity-edge pool and panoramic views of the ocean. This space is created by the subtle marriage of the building’s geometry with the contours of the hill: an 11-story trapezoidal tower is perched on a 4-story base, producing unobstructed views and indoor and outdoor spaces that flow effortlessly together.
